D700 Impressions

Once again, I thought it might be time to write a small review about the D700, I can’t claim it will be an objective one, nor a technical on full of information on features and specs.  I like to think of what follows is a working photographers view.  It will be skewed towards general photography mostly for now.

Body
It’s an A in my book with its fault being that its heavy and just a little less comfortable in the hands than previous bodies.  At the cost of this added weight though, you get a camera that feels like its built like a tank and meant to last.  With the MB10 added on its no less substantial than the famed Xbrick (Nikon D2x) I used to lug around.  Ironically also that camera ...

Nikon Announcements

Nikon shocked the world according to some when they made their late summer announcements for their two new models.  What follows is just a few thoughts on my part with regard to the new cameras.

The examples (of course non of us know if they are real and what quality they really represent) certainly show Nikons having made a quantum leap for noise control.  I say control as I do not believe the sensor has much to do with it, rather it’s a sensor new noise control hardware solution ala Expeed that delivers better control.  I can’t help but wonder though based on the examples I have seen so far if its not going to come at the cost of some detail.  Nikon also starting the sensor at ISO 200 is also interesting bec...

Fuji S5 review

Well, I thought it might be time to write a small review about this new camera, it certainly won't be an objective one, nor a technical on full of information on features and specs.  I like to think of what follows is a working photographers view.  It will be skewed towards Nature Photography mostly for now.

So, I said this was a review of the S5, lets get to just talking about it now.

Body
Build is wonderful, finally Fuji gets themselves in a real body and if you have never played with an S5 or D200 you’ll love how compact yet professional the bodies are.  The body is lightweight and Nikon is world class on ergonomics so you’ll also love the way it feels in the hands and how intu...

Picture  - Still from the Film "Last Breath"

Its really fascinating to think it took me so long to buy a Canon digital.  I had my own whole set of derived logic of why Nikon and Fuji were all I ever really needed.  You know how it goes though, curiosity kills the cat and my curiosity finally got the best of me after 2 years of tugging at my sub conscious.

Noise is what did it, that an the irresistible Canon rebates that allowed me to get a 5D for just over $2100.00 US.

Noise you ask? ...

Ever buy a new camera, software package or tool knowing that its going to really improve your photography later to find out it just wasn’t all that?

Ever find your self looking for more than camera reviews, product reviews, interviews and more information that does little to help improve you as a photographer?

Ever look at your photos as compared to the really great photos and wonder what your missing?

There are thousands of questions like these that photographers often never deal with or others puzzle over for a life time.

As I played with new Open Source tools to build the new RAD Photos I realized we needed and ope...

Coming Attractions
Whats coming to RAD Photos?

Hello Folks,

Fun Fun Fun ahead for my friends!

This is a free site for now and its meant to be a small community where photographers can share photos, share discussion on the lesser depths of photography and in generally relax and have fun!

This site was actually born out of a larger portal I am building for a national advocacy campaign for professional photographers.  The old RAD Photos site had pretty much run its course and there just wasn’t much of my old work I wanted to show any more as I am trying to move forward, learn more and take better pictures.

So, I decided to make this site for you and me and a place where we can really have fun and chat.  Here is what I am working on for RAD Photos.

I could definitely use your help!

There are many many ways you can help by volunteering your time and energy.  We need articles, editors, publishers, moderators, photography, interesting articles and people to just go and recruit other fun people who may be interested.

Submitting articles and photos is pretty easy, just register and then you’ll have access to submit articles, setup an album in the gallery and post on the forums.

I’ll be creating some more specific FAQ’s on how to...

Vista for Photographers Review

tn_Airport_jpg.jpgPhotographers Vista Report

The following report is offered as an unofficial resource and relays my experience as a photographer and upgrading to the new Microsoft Vista operating system.  I do have a very technical background so I’ll offer no apologies if anything is not comprehendible in this report.  If you e-mail me I’ll try to update the report and let you know of its availability.

As it is with almost every MS Operating System release I have experienced thus far, from the original windows through Vista early adoption is a series of tradeoffs and compromises.  Fortunately today we have many ways we can work around these issues and so while there may be other and better ways to deal with the issues I...

Ironically also that camera being 12MP which we’ll talk about later. The body is solid though and its pretty comfortable in the hands but I expect people upgrading to a pro level body will complain about its weight.  I always complained about the Xbrick and so this is going to be a love hate affair with this camera.

Well, more love hate going on with the battery grip!  I guess this is all going to depend on who you are and how you view the new grip.  If you want to strap on some extra power quickly, added frame rate or extended life then it’s a pretty nice solution as it does not require you to remove your main battery.  Simply pull off the rubber seal protecting the two sets of contacts on the bottom of your body and slap it on and screw it in.  I like that the grip seems to marry up and seat really well and you can hardly tell you added a grip.

Lets say though that you want to keep the grip on permanently.  Well, to recharge that battery you left in the main body you’ll have to pull off the grip and get it out.  I suppose you can argue that you don’t do that at all and just leave it as a second emergency gas tank or leave it out all together.  I suppose in the latter scenario you could just go with the heftier ELN4 battery for extended power.  Other than these points I have made, I really do not have a lot to say about the grip.  Its first rate and overall an excellent solution.

Menu System
Definitely revamped if you are coming from an older Nikon or back over from the Fuji like I am.   Still though, if you like menus and features then welcome to overall menu nirvana because there is a lot to explore and tinker with on this camera.

I suppose I could go on about the menus for a long time, but you can get that from other review sites.  I will say though as an experienced photographer that you will want to go in and really work your way through all the settings and I have not even done that yet.  Many of the defaults set at the factory are not ideal in my mind.  Dust Cleaning, File Formats, AF and others are just a few things that you’ll want to look at and be sure you are happy with.  Same goes for Image review information features, yup, you got to turn on blinkers and other info you may have been used to by default on other cameras.  The Nikon website has a cool video tutorial in their product info on this camera and you can glean a few quick tips from there about some of the newer features.  Bit Depth was another setting I had to increase to 14bit from the 12bit default I found it set to.

Fast enough for most!  I believe most will agree, you got enough for basic sports coverage and when combined with the higher ISOs that are readily useable now and the CAM3500 51 point autofocus you have a very responsive camera and it overall provides a nice robust shooting experience.  Yes, if you have a D3 or faster Canon then its not that, but its enough for the money you’ll be spending.

Focus & other Features
I am very happy with the AF system in the D700, its fast and accurate and adjustable if needed.  Its hard to beat that and in some quick shooting of flying birds with a long 500mm lens I found the results to be sharp and pleasing.

Liveview is something can be useful on occasion and despite being a little akward to use works well.

Active D-Lighting seems to be somewhat helpful, its no DR replacement for the Fuji S5 and so images still remain a little contrasty with highlights blowing out fairly easily if you do not shoot for them.  One neat thing here though is that the low noise really allows for more shadow lifting in post processing.

Picture Quality

<!--[endif]-->

I’d rate the overall picture quality pretty good so far.  I have seen some evidence of a slight blue hue sometimes in Auto White Balance and shady situations.  As compared to out of the camera the images are a little less sharp than those from the Canon 5D and I am guessing if I did an all out test as I have done with other cameras that the 5D would still win out over the D700 in overall detail.

Detail and colors overall are pleasing and seem accurate.  I think the low noise is also quite impressive.

Conclusion
So far the camera is great overall.  There is a lot to be said in having a camera that is good in most things as opposed to some things.  I think about the only argument one could make against the D700 at this point is that they might want more pixels.  I would have liked to have seen Nikon bring this one in at 16MP, I think they could have done that and had a dream camera with extra resolution and yet flexibility in file size.  Its enough for me to sell off my 5D even though I love the lens I use with that camera on the 28-300 IS.  I’ll like add the 5DII and then I think I am set for 3 more years.
